Are Sulcata Tortoises Good Pets?

This can be a tricky question to answer. Everyone has their own opinion as to what constitutes a “good pet.” And depending on your opinion, you will ultimately be the one to decide if sulcata tortoise will be a good pet for you.

Once you understand how to care for a sulcata tortoise, you may be able to make your decision on whether a sulcata is the right pet for you or not. But, if you’re still aren’t sure, research sulcata tortoise personality and behavioral traits.

Sulcata Tortoise Personality

Sulcata tortoises can be shy, aggressive, friendly or somewhere in-between. On average, females tend to be more shy, and males can be more friendly and often dog-like. That does not mean that you won’t find a shy male tortoise or an outgoing female tortoise.

Sulcata Tortoise Behavior

Sulcata tortoises are known for their digging, constant want for food and ramming.

They can dig holes 10-feet or deeper, and if the hole is near a home or building, it can easily destroy the foundation.

Sulcatas can ram and damage property or hurt people. Often sulcatas will ram at people and other animals because they are defending their territory. These tortoises can be territorial over their space.

And don’t misconstrue begging for food for wanting attention… They just want food… Although, it is really cute when a sulcata comes up to you on its own.

Not all tortoises will experience all bad behaviors, but it’s good to know what you’re getting into before you get into it.

Do Sulcata Tortoises Make Good Pets?

When asking yourself if sulcata tortoises are good pets. It’s your call. Can you house and feed a sulcata? Are you prepared for the potential for property damage? How will you deal with a 100-lb tortoise ramming you?

For many sulcata tortoise keepers, the large personalities win over the destructive nature of the species.

But, keep in mind that sulcata tortoises are a huge commitment. They become large and can live over 100 years. The cute baby tortoise you found at a reptile expo or pet store will grow quickly and needs a lot of care and equipment.

In the end, ask yourself these questions before getting a pet sulcata:

  • Do you have a walled yard or at least a large secured space?
  • Do you have a strong back?
  • Are you prepared for the possibility of property damage? Do you have the finances to fix it?
  • Are you prepared to add a tortoise in your last will and testament?
