Does Sulcata Tortoise Get Cold?

Although they are temperature tolerant, a sulcata tortoise can get cold. Larger sulcatas are more tolerant than smaller baby sulcatas, but that does not mean that they should be kept at too low temperatures.

Adult sulcata tortoises can handle cold weather in the 40’s, but they should not be left outside at regularly low temperatures.

When housing sulcatas outside, it’s important to consider nighttime lows. Sulcatas do not get cold in the sense that they need a sweater. But sulcatas do not thrive in cold weather.

Do Tortoises Feel Cold?

Tortoises are cold-blooded animals. Unless they are under or have recently been under a basking bulb or source of heat, it is normal for them to feel cold. But, tortoises do not like cold temperatures. Ideally, you do not want to leave your sulcata in an environment where the temperatures are regularly below 60-degrees Fahrenheit.

If left in an environment that is too cold, the body temperature naturally lowers. But, sulcata tortoises do not hibernate, so you do not want to leave your sulcata in cold weather for extended periods.

Housing a Sulcata Tortoise in the Winter

During winter, the weather naturally gets colder. Depending on where you live, the weather may be colder and snowier than others. If you live in an area where the winter weather is below 60-degrees, provide a heat source.

For larger tortoises, consider a heated greenhouse or a heated insulated dog house. For baby sulcata tortoises, consider bringing the tortoise inside.

Use a digital thermometer to check on the tortoise’s carapace. You don’t want the carapace to be cold. Ideally, the carapace should be 75-degrees or warmer.
