How Much Should My Pet Sulcata Weigh?

Sulcata tortoises are the third largest tortoise in the world and weigh upwards to 200 pounds as adults!  But you’ll see a ton of variation in growth from this species. Two tortoises at the same age can weigh vastly different weights.

What Affects Tortoise Growth

There are many factors that can affect sulcata tortoise growth – husbandry, diet and overall health are most common.

Housing

Improper lighting and heating can stunt growth. Too low humidity for baby sulcatas can play a role in growth. Improper housing, in general, can cause health problems that can stunt growth.

Diet

Sulcatas need a high fiber, low protein diet. Feed sulcata tortoises grass, hay and leafy greens. Limit vegetables and other fatty or high-protein foods. Improper diet can not only cause a tortoise to grow slower, but also too fast, potentially causing obesity.

Health and Genetics

Any health condition can stunt growth. A tortoise that wasn’t cared for in its younger years can have stunted growth even after all housing and diet concerns have been corrected. Common health problems in Sulcata tortoises, such as metabolic bone disease, pyramiding, parasites and respiratory problems, can affect growth.

Genetics can also play a role in the adult weight and size of your tortoise. For example, Sudanese sulcatas are naturally larger. And a familial line of smaller sulcatas may weigh

Monitor Your Sulcata’s Growth

It’s important to monitor your sulcata tortoise’s growth rate. Don’t stress and weigh your tortoise daily. Like humans, your pet tortoise’s weight can fluctuate.

While your tortoise is small enough to weigh easily, consider weighing your pet monthly, however if you feel like your tortoise is changing its normal eating habits or activity level, consider weekly to catch any potential health conditions sooner than later.

Observing your sulcata’s weight will ensure you’re not overfeeding or offering too many treats. Obesity can be just as dangerous as being underweight.

Hatchling Sulcata Tortoise Weight

Hatchling sulcata tortoises typically weigh between 30-40 grams. You’ll find hatchling Sudanese sulcata tortoises may weigh more than this, but on average hatchling sulcata babies weight about 30-40 grams and weigh between 40-50 grams by three months old.
