Coco coir is one of the best substrates for indoor sulcata enclosures. It is breathable, biodegradable, non-toxic, eco-friendly and holds moisture well. And, when you clean out the tortoise enclosure, you can dump the soiled substrate in your garden beds.

Coconut coir substrate elicits a natural bedding for sulcata tortoises. Coconut husk substrate can absorb liquids quickly while safely breaking down odors or waste to reduce smell. This can make the animal living environment clean, comfortable and healthy.

Coconut fiber is made from the tough outer shell of coconuts. The natural properties of coconut fiber provide an excellent balance of moisture retention and aeration, creating an optimal environment for tortoises that mirrors their native habitats. The fibers also promote natural digging behaviors, allowing your tortoise to engage in instinctive activities, such as burrowing and nesting.

Soak one brick in water. The brick will absorb the water and expand. One brick will expand to fill approximately 2 gallons of substrate. Before placing the substrate in the enclosure, squeeze any excess water out of the coconut fiber. The excess water will cause mold, which you don’t want in your tortoise enclosures.
